Wrestling teaches more than moves
This was the first sports story I decided to write as a sports feature my sophomore year. In order to really understand this complex sport, I attended practices squeezed between bleachers trying not to get kicked in the face. If I hadn't done that, I would have never been able to see how hard these athletes work.
Soccer team raises money, awareness for pediatric cancer
In an unfortunately unique situation, two members of the varsity soccer team battled and defeated two forms of pediatric cancer. Our school was then named a "Go Gold" school to raise money for pediatric cancer. This piece balances storytelling with family privacy.
CAPS AND CONCHES: Championship team built through tradition
As a journalist who started in sports writing, I was over the moon when our boys' cross country team finished fourth in the nation. I wanted to make sure that the tradition and bonding behind the scenes was brought to the forefront. As captivating as their races are, the feature angle of this team was much more interesting than their race results.
